LH strips vs PdG tests vs BBT: what each measures

Three methods. Three jobs. Not a diagnosis.

GuideChecked Oct 16No paid rankingsDisclosure

LH strips, PdG tests, and basal temperature answer different questions. The sentences below are what the companies already printed on the listings in this directory, checked October 15–16, 2026. A reading is one data point. It does not tell you whether you will conceive.

What each method is for

LH strips

What it measures
Luteinizing hormone in urine. Clearblue’s Advanced Digital Ovulation Test detects LH and estrogen. Premom sells quantitative LH strips and reads photos of them.
Timing the company describes
Clearblue’s touch-screen monitor shows Low, High, or Peak from estrogen and LH for people trying to conceive. That is a fertile-window signal from the test, not a statement that ovulation already happened.
Limit the listing states
Premom says a line on a strip is not proof you ovulated, and that a photo can be wrong if the lighting or timing is off.

PdG tests

What it measures
PdG, a urine metabolite of progesterone, as named by Inito, Mira’s Ultra4 wands, and Oova. Proov’s homepage discusses progesterone and names PdG.
Timing the company describes
Inito says a rise in PdG is how it tries to show that ovulation already happened, rather than only predicting it.
Limit the listing states
Proov says its PdG test is FDA-cleared to help confirm ovulation, and the listing says a clearance is not a personal diagnosis. A strip does not tell you how to treat a result.

Basal body temperature

What it measures
Temperature. Tempdrop’s sensor records basal body temperature during sleep. Natural Cycles says it uses temperature to label fertile and non-fertile days. Flo says a free account can log basal body temperature. None of those three describe a urine hormone sensor for this signal.
Timing the company describes
Tempdrop describes a temperature rise after ovulation, when progesterone is dominant. That shift is retrospective on the chart.
Limit the listing states
Tempdrop says temperature-only methods can miss ovulation, and that many charting methods also record cervical fluid. Natural Cycles’ birth-control wording, including 93% typical use and 98% perfect use, is on that listing. It is not a claim about a thermometer by itself.

A reading is one data point

The fertility department says a test result is one data point and does not tell you whether you will conceive. Take a result you do not understand to your own clinician. This page is not medical advice.

When a monitor reads more than one hormone

Mira, Inito, and Oova each name more than one urine hormone on their own pages. The side-by-side of hardware, hormones, and printed prices is onfertility monitors. Strips, apps, and wearables are onovulation trackers. The department is Fertility & ovulation.

Questions about these methods

Does an LH strip confirm ovulation?

Premom’s listing says a line on a strip is not proof you ovulated. Clearblue’s touch-screen monitor reads estrogen and LH and shows Low, High, or Peak for people trying to conceive. Inito says a rise in PdG is how it tries to show that ovulation already happened, rather than only predicting it.

What does a PdG test measure?

Inito, Mira, and Oova name PdG as a urine metabolite of progesterone. Proov says its PdG test is FDA-cleared to help confirm ovulation. The listing says a clearance is not a personal diagnosis.

Does a temperature shift confirm ovulation?

Tempdrop says the sensor records basal body temperature during sleep and describes a temperature rise after ovulation. The same listing says temperature-only methods can miss ovulation. Natural Cycles says it uses temperature to label fertile and non-fertile days. A chart is not a diagnosis.
